The National Register of Historic Places is the U.S. Federal Government’s list of districts or properties recognized as “worthy of preservation.”  To be eligible, properties must be at least 50 years old and retain their basic historic integrity. In addition, the entity must meet one of four criteria: it must be associated with a broad pattern of history; associated with the life of a historically significant person or persons; possess architectural merit; and/or have the potential to yield important historical information.

Some people believe that a National Register designation encumbers or restricts their right to manage their home or property in the way they choose. That is not true. In fact, an NR listing does not even prevent a property owner from remodelling, repairing, altering, selling or even demolishing a property. Nor does it obligate the property owner to make repairs or improvements. However (in addition to raising awareness and pride) a listing can make a property or district eligible for Federal tax incentives, such as an investment tax credit for certified rehabilitation, and it sometimes is a prerequisite for funding from non-profit organizations, such as the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
