National Origins

That most Cleveland Heights streets sport the name of English towns or London streets or are derived from words in the English language is well agreed, but we have many street names originating from other nationalities gracing our community. First, there are a few common American first names, such as Janette and Blanche, of French origin, and Radcliffe, an English last name of French origin. Perhaps these streets were named for women in the Minor family, and after Radcliffe College.

Our two Native American tribal names are Navahoe (a common spelling in the 1920s) and Delaware. Ormond Road, believes a member of one of its original families, was named for fashionable Ormond Beach, Florida, where John D. Rockefeller, Sr., wintered and died; that resort, in turn, was named for a Captain James Ormond. Ormond as a surname is English, French or Irish (often with an “e” added); it is also the name of a major street in London.

Monte Vista (note spelling) and Pomona are communities in California and also towns in Colorado and Florida, respectively named in the Spanish, which apparently had a stylish ring in the 1920s Midwest. Alpine is, of course, the Latin-origin name of the Central European mountain range (and our Alpine Road does not have a steep slope for such a short street). Vandemar is surely from the Dutch.
